Mail IGS

There are several means of communication available on IGS. Users can communicate publicly or privately. The preferred means is use of the  tell  command, which allows private communication between any two people logged on to IGS. If you are playing a game, the  say  command allows private communication with your opponent.

The  yell  command is for use when in a  channel . Channels are areas for group communications about a specific topic. Your message is seen by all of the other people in the channel, and you see all of their messages. Channel discussions are not seen outside the channel.

When you are observing a game, you have both the  kibitz and the  chatter  commands available. Your comments are seen by all others observing that game, and you see all comments made by any others observing that same game.

There is also the  shout command. This displays your message to all people logged on to IGS that have this switch set to true. This command should be with discretion.

Other means include  beep  and  message. To attract someone's attention, use the  beep  command. This not only causes a bell sound to occur, but also displays the text message 'playername is beeping you' on that person's monitor screen. In the event that you have to log off, and have not communicated with the person you desire to, you may leave a text message for him or her using the  message  command.

Black to play and white dies.
