The demon Akunosuke was once imprisoned at the Honnoji Temple by the monk Nikkai. Nikkai thought he could teach the demon good manners by teaching it to play Go. The demon learned to play, and quite well, but its skills could never match those of Nikkai. One day, while Nikkai studied the board, the demon grew frustrated beyond control, and, reaching across the board, tore the obi (sash) from the monk's robes. The demon turned and ran, the monk tried to give chase, but became entangled in his robes. As the demon turned, he upset the Go board, and so, in a skatter of stones, he escaped! Now, there is no place for Akunosuke in the world, and so he wanders, homeless. However, he watches the people that play on the internet, whispers in their ears, and so influences otherwise honorable people to become escapers. ![]() Escapers, Escaping, and Disconnections For various reasons a player will disconnect from a game intentionally or unintentionally, or be the first to adjourn from a game. This player will be marked as having disconnected from the game. IGS will automatically resign games older than 30 days for the player marked as having disconnected from the game, unless the adjourned game is continued. Neither player will be noted as disconnected if IGS restarts while a game is in progress. The load command can be used by either player to restart an adjourned game anytime during the 30 day period. After the game is loaded, the game can be continued. At this point the game will continue, be timed out, or one of the players may disconnect. If one of the players disconnects after the game has been loaded, IGS will update the adjourned game record to show which player disconnected. Players can use the delete command to remove an adjourned game. Games with less than 30 moves will not count toward either player's rating. The look command can be used to display the date and time of an adjourned game and which player disconnected from the game. Questions and Answers Q: Games with no moves will not count, right? A: True, games with fewer than 30 moves do not count and are simply erased. Q: If a game is started, then adjourned, then another game is started with the same player, what happens to the first game? A: It will not count and is gone, if the same players play the same colors. Q: If both players agree to an adjournment, does the game still count towards escaping? A: Yes. In order for the game to not count, both players must delete the game. The basic idea for escaping: once a game is started, both players agree to finish. Q: If I lose my connection, am I marked as the escaper? A: Yes. Unfortunately there is no way to tell if you actually lost connection due to net problems and tried to come back, or simply escaped. Apologies. Q: How long before both players can resume the game until the game is removed? A: If you look at uptime output, there is a line for how long games are stored. Q: How long should I stay on waiting for someone? A: Hard question. Maybe as long as it takes to make you feel comfortable. |
