Usage: rank 'rank number' 'class'

You can use this command to set your rank. Establishing a rank will also make it easier to find games. By default, the rank for a new account is NR (Not Ranked). After you set your rank and play your first rated game with another ranked player, you are automatically entered into the rating system, as long as the rank is greater than 28k (28 kyu). IGS will automatically determine your rating. For details about entering the rating system, please read the document called rating. A fter a player enters the rating system, he or she will have both a rank number and a rating number. The rating number will also adjust the rank number. Only IGS can set the rating number.

1. The rank numbers are as follows:
   28 kyu - 1 kyu
   1 dan - 6 dan
2. Ranks are divided into three classes:
   k (kyu)
   d (dan)
   p (professional)
3. IGS also has two non-rank classes:
   NR (Not Ranked)
   ??? (Unknown)
4. Examples for setting a rank:
   rank 20k     rank 4k
   rank 1d     rank 4d

Players can set their rank up to 4d (4 dan). Ranks above 4d, and professional ranks, can only be set by an IGS administrator. If a player is stronger than 4d, the system will make the adjustment to the rating after twenty rated games are played. IGS ranks and ratings are stronger than most systems by at least three to four ranks in the dan range.

If you do not know your rank, or are uncertain of your rank equivalent on IGS, try playing a few games before deciding upon a rank.
