'rating' is the _second_ number that appears in the 'stats', after "Rating"
(the 1st number is the 'rank'). Example: Rating: 6d* 37
After playing 20 _rated_ games a 'rank' receives a * next to it. This
indicates at least 20 rated games have been played and adds some validity
to the rank. For example, a rank may be set to 15k, but that does not
necessarily mean its value is 15k. A * next to the rank indicates it has at
least that value. **Note: 6d* and higher, ratings can go down if no games
are played. Professional ranks (p) are not rated and remain the same.
Rated games are games between players with a 'rank', AND the difference in
strength is 3 stones or less (including handicaps to balance the strength
to within 3 stones or less). If the difference in strength is 4 stones or
greater, without the proper balancing handicap stones, then the game is
_not_ a rated game. See: help free and help freegame
After a 'rank' (26k - 9d) is set, and one 'rated' game is played, a player
is automatically entered (permanently) into the rating system. IGS computes
the ratings once a day. The 'rank' can be reset at any time by a player,
but not the 'rating' since the 'rating' is determined and controlled by the
rating system. "NR" and "???" ranks are not entered into the rating system.
