Beginner's Guide to IGS
Step 1. Register an Account
-
Please register an IGS
account.
-
You will receive a registration letter by email if your registration was successful.
Step 2. Download A Client Program For IGS
-
Download a graphical IGS client from the GO Archives. Different client programs for IGS will give IGS a different look and feel. Experiment and see which one you like best. Some clients are 'shareware' and some are 'freeware'. (Shareware fees are unrelated to IGS)
If you are using a PC, we recommend the 'PandaEgg' (egg) client.
If you are using a Macintosh, we recommend 'Go Servant' or 'MacGo'.
If you are using UNIX/Linux, we recommend the 'Xgospel' client.
There is an excellent guide for Xgospel at http://gailly.net/xgospel
-
Install the client on your computer.
-
You can also connect to IGS without a client by using telnet, but a client makes using IGS easier.
Just enter this line into any telnet program
(IGS address and port number): telnet igs.joyjoy.net 6969
Step 3. Connect to the Internet
-
If you are a modem user, connect to the Internet first before running
the client program. However, in some cases you just run the client program.
-
If you are a LAN, DSL, ISDN, or cable modem user, simply start the client program that you downloaded and installed on your computer.
-
With the IGS client program, login into IGS using your registered IGS account name and password.
-
To see an example using the WinIGC Windows client, see the Guide to WinIGC.
-
If you have questions send email to: igs-adm@panda-igs.joyjoy.net
-
You may need help from other people on IGS. To communicate with them,
use the tell or
shout command.
To learn more about the IGS commands, please refer to the
IGS Commands page.
