question1
Hello, Ms. Mannami. I’m always rooting for you. I enjoyed your commentaries on NHK. By the way, can you tell me who your rivals are? Do you feel different when you are playing one of your rivals?

Consultation One: Mr. Nishida
answer
Hello, Mr. Nishida. Thank you for watching me on NHK.

My rival is Ayubo, the nickname for Ayumi Suzuki 4-dan. She has been my rival ever since I began playing go and she’s also a good friend. Without her, I may not have become a professional . . .

As for my feelings when I play Ayu, in the past I certainly felt quite competitive – so much so that she would say, ‘‘Kana-bo, you play too fiercely.’

Nowadays I still feel fighting spirit, but I focus on displaying all my strength and doing justice to myself. Maybe I’m a bit more adult than before.

Anyway, I’m really lucky I have a rival. Away from the go board, we have a lot of good times together. Ayu is an important friend for me.

Do you have any rivals, Mr. Nishida? I hope that you all devote yourselves to polishing your skills and that you really enjoy playing go.
