Until now, I have been playing go with my wife, but my son is now five years old, so I'm thinking that it may be time to teach him.My dream is for all my family to play go together, but I myself was compulsorily taught by my father and I couldn't bear it when I had to practice.

I started playing go again as an adult and realized how interesting it was, and I sometimes regret that I didn't realize this when I was a child, as I would surely have got stronger.

I want my son to be interested in go and to keep playing it, but how does one teach a little child how interesting go is without forcing the game on him?

Hello, Mr.Uchizaki.

Playing go with your family -- that's a marvelous dream. I hope you are able to make it come true.

Actually, our older daughter is now four years old and hasn't begun to play go properly yet. She just knows a bit about capturing stones. It's difficult to know how to start teaching go, and we are still trying to work it out.

In our family, my husband is the one who comes up with all the ideas about education. On our daughter's birthday in March, he said:"How about playing on a 5x5 board?"

There's a book on 5x5 go put out by the Nihon Ki-in which has puzzles using a 5x5 board, so we tried using the puzzles in it. We gave proper hints and, one way or another, out daughter was able to work out the answers. As an introduction to go, the 19x19 board is out of the question, and we feel that the 13x13 and 9x9 boards are also too big, but with the 5x5 board the beginner can count the final territories and understand more quickly.

The only thing is that after the first few problems in this book the level goes up suddenly, which is a problem. Whereupon, Cho U said: "So, the 5x5 board is too wide. Kosumi[our daughter] is four years old, so let's try a 4x4 board." He began composing 4x4 problems. Of course, he also made a go board by hand - it was easy, being so small. Kosumi really likes the cute go board and stones and enjoys playing. She often says,"Let's do a problem."

Mr.Uchizaki, you also wrote about your experience. It's a real shame you had to play go when you didn't want to. I think that the way one teaches is important, but the most important thing is creating the right atmosphere. The main thing, after all, is to get your child to like go. At any rate, when your child learns something, please praise him generously.

Children develop quickly, so I'm sure the day is not distant when you will have a go family.

A follow-up story: When we started making 4x4 problems, surprisingly we came up with problems that even professionals can't solve at a glance, so we realized anew the profundity of go. We made the 4x4 board for Kosumi, but it would be nice if it became a new tool to help people enjoy go.
