Hello, Ms. Izawa.

At present, I am 2-dan. I often hear that consistency is important, but during a game how can one judge whether one should go for territory or build thickness?

Hello, Ms. Tahara. Thank you for your question.

It's certainly true that consistency is important. I often get into trouble because while I am attacking the opponent, I lose confidence and suddenly switch to territory. I am left with major regrets when I lose a game for this reason.

I think that go style also has a big influence on whether you build territory or thickness. Striking the right balance between the two is the difficult thing. If you just go for territory, your positions become thin, you come under attack and gain nothing . . . On the other hand, if you focus just on influence, you suddenly realize that you are way behind in territory . . . In order to avoid the above problems, the important things, I believe, are finding a balance between territory and thickness and positional judgement.

In the opening, when you are playing a territorial game, please stop and check a number of times that you have no weak groups. If you do, you should reinforce them.

When you are focussing on thickness, you should use the thickness to attack the opponent's weak groups and also try to expand your moyo.

I hope that you keep enjoying go!
