The cleverest people at teaching go to beginners that I have witnessed until now get their pupils emotionally involved in it. I felt that they created a space in which people could feel that they had had a fun day.

Children were happy when they were given sweets in the rest period. They had fun spending time with their mother, being praised when they captured a stone in atari.

People in their teens and 20s had an exciting time playing a competitive game with people of their own age.

People in their 30s and 40s felt happy at being able to enjoy the same hobby as their children. Company employees playing together might win or lose, but had a good time drinking together afterwards. And so on. I think everyone can enjoy go in a different way, so the most effective teaching method is to discover a way for the players to have fun.

When I teach beginners, at any rate I praise them! I try to fill this space with laughter. When someone is saying the game is difficult, I encourage them, saying that everyone finds that at first. I give them easy problems to build their confidence.

I hope you all enjoy playing with your family and friends.
