Q&A of Yuki Shigeno 2 dan
The question 2 this month
I've just started go (about one month ago). at present, I just enjoy playing the stones on the board. However, I'm sure that the game will be more fun if I learn how to win.
Can you tell me what kind of study I should do as an almost complete beginner? When I play through professional games, I don't understand the meaning of the moves. By the way, I am trying to solve go problems in books and magazines.

Welcome to the world of go!
I'm very happy to hear how much you are enjoying the game.
For a beginner, any kind of study will be useful. In particular, life-and-death problems are essential, but rather than tackling difficult problems, you should try large numbers of relatively simple problems.
It's also important to play through professional games. There's no need to try to understand the meaning of each move. The important thing is to get a feeling for good shape and the flow of the game; learning this visually is the important thing. As a beginner, how about playing through just the first 50 moves? There's no need to tire yourself by going all the way to the end.
As you get more and more used to it, you can go further in the game.
As with life-and-death problems, you should find of method of studying that is fun and doesn't tire you out.
