question1
In the Yutoku Honinbo tournament, I reached the main tournament for the first time, but, as you would expect, here everyone was very strong, and I fought in vain. Can you tell me what is the difference between prefectural-representative level and professionals? (Incidentally, I think that the level of amateur go in Okinawa would rise if there were go professionals here.)

answer
Hello, Mr. Taira.
I’m very happy to receive a question from someone in Okinawa. [Chinen was born in Okinawa.]

You must be quite strong to have reached the main section of the Yutoku Honinbo tournament. It’s a pity you lost, but I believe that playing strong opponents helps you get stronger, so please keep trying.

Concerning the difference in strength between prefectural representatives and professionals, it’s hard to generalize, but my guess would be two to three stones.

As you say, it would be nice if professionals could be based in Okinawa, but it’s not possible at present because professional tournaments are staged in Honshu. However, with the increasing use of the Net, it may be possible one day.

I hope you continue enjoying go despite the heat of the Okinawa summer.
